Many papers can be used, but those not specifically made for wallpapering will need some extra attentiveness prior to pasting. Scrapbook papers, wrapping papers and specialty papers should be lightly sprayed with a matte sealer and allowed to dry prior to using. This protects the colors from coming off when smoothed out on the wall. If the pattern is small adequate wallpaper from regular wallpaper market can also be used. It is important that patterns match even around corners. In order to do this, it is great to put a separate sheet of paper on each wall and only meet them in the corners, not in the middle of a wall. This is especially important when using textured wallpapers.

It is recommended to test which adhesive works the best before pasting on unusual papers. Wallpaper paste will not work well on some textured or handmade papers. Paste a small test piece on to card and allow to dry before checking to see whether it has stuck firmly. Thick papers and card may need general purpose glue around the edges in expanding to paste all over, to prevent them from curling up.
The most important thing to do first is to assure the wood you are planning to cover is plane with no bumps or indentations. These can be resolved with a good sanding or filling with potential wood filler and then sanded smooth. Prior to applying paper, walls should be sized by painting with wallpaper paste and allowed to dry. Cut pieces of wallpaper the same height as each wall less about 1/8 inch and about 1/4 inch wider than the wall. Do not cut out door or window holes until the wallpaper is on the wall and fully dried. Using a leech applicator put wallpaper paste all over back side of the wallpaper piece. Place it on the wall lining it up along the top and smoothing it down. Be sure to remove all air bubbles using a rubber roller or by thought about using an old credit card. Do Not Rub. Rubbing may cause wrinkles or even tears in thin paper. While still damp wipe any paste off the front of the paper with a damp, not wet sponge. Once the paper is dry, thought about cut out the holes for the windows and doors with a sharp blade.
It sometimes takes any attempts to get it right. There is nothing wrong with trying your technique on a sample piece of wood.
